A Brief Overview

The University of York was founded in 1963 with 200 students. Since then, it has expanded to 11,000 students and has over 30 academic departments and research centres.

Academic excellence

From its inception, the University has concentrated on strong viable departments and teaching and research of the highest quality. The quality of York's teaching has received many accolades. York and Cambridge top the teaching league with the highest scores in official teaching assessments.

York is also rated 6th out of 172 Higher Education institutions for research, with 18 of its 23 departments rated 5 or 5*. The Campus

The main campus at Heslington is a 200-acre landscaped park, well known for its lake and wildfowl. Here the colleges and academic buildings are on a level site within walking distance of each other. Proximity to the historic city of York makes the University a popular choice and provides a pleasant working and residential environment.

The Colleges

There are currently eight colleges at York: Alcuin, Derwent, Goodricke, Halifax, James, Langwith, Vanbrugh and Wentworth. James College contains accommodation for students. All the other colleges except Halifax, as well as providing accommodation, house teaching facilities for a number of different departments. Every student and every member of staff is a member of a college. With the exception of Wentworth, which is all-graduate, each college has about 900 undergraduate, 120 graduate and 160 academic staff members of both sexes. The head of each college is the Provost who is also a full-time member of staff. The colleges break down the University community into smaller societies which allow their members to get to know each other more easily and within which there is the opportunity for contact both formally and informally between individuals of all ages and occupations in the University.

The colleges are all of equal status within the University. Each one has its own constitution and the day to day running of the colleges is managed by an elected committee of staff and student members under the chairmanship of the Provost. There is a Junior Common Room in each college which is managed by the elected Junior Common Room Committee for students. The Senior Common Room is managed in the same way by elected representatives of the academic and administrative members in the college.

Many academic departments have their headquarters in one of the colleges, but the college community is nevertheless a deliberate mixture of disciplines, years and sexes.

(5) 手提电话

手提电话大致有两种收费方式：
① 月费方案 (Monthly Payment)，即每月交纳一定费用，电话公司则提供一定量的免费通话时间，超出部分按通话量计费。选择这种方案，电话公司会送你一个手机，但最新最好的手机一般你还需要付一点钱。月费方案的最大限制是你必须与电话公司签一年合同，中途退出仍需交纳全年费用。
② 即付即打 (Pay As You Go) 你不用交纳任何费用，向电话公司买个手机之后就可以上网。在打电话之前，你必须先向你的电话帐号内存钱，可以通过购买电话公司的电话卡(Voucher)或通过现金卡转帐。这种服务没有时间限制。

英国主要有五家移动电话网Vodafone, T-mobile, Orangem O2和 Virgin Mobile，其中大多数中国学生选用Vodafone。你可以到MobileShop.com去比较各家移动电话的价格。
